Work Placements and Courses

Barista Skills

Students from Linwood College and Kimihia Teen Parent's College attended a six week barista training at Ara, building some great skills for the work place. As part of the course, they got out to see busy cafes in the city, and see what it is really like making hundreds of high quality coffees every day.

Students: Stella Takai, Shania Toso, Nimoe Lam Sam, Timothy Ta’ei, Satyn Savage, Pritesh Nair.

The Warehouse

This placement builds customer service skills, as well as working in a variety of roles such as in big stores like The Warehouse. Many students who complete this work placement go on to getting part time work at The Warehouse and other employers.

Students: Hayley Claridge, Alisha Le Beau, Jayden Bamford, Conrad Kearns and Devan Skerten

Meeting the Mayor

Students from Linwood College attended a one day work experience at Christchurch City Council, where they were exposed to a wide variety of people and roles. We visited the contact centre, Tūranga library, council chambers and the Mayor’s office. We met with Lianne Dalziel, the Mayor of Christchurch, and heard about her pathway to becoming a leading figure in the city. We experienced what it was like in the council chamber where public issues are debated, where Samantha Johnson sat in the prime seat to hear a ‘case’. Students interviewed various members from across their teams, from Networking and Traffic Management, to Building Consents, to Customer Service.

Students: Alana Le Cren, Tau Jackson, Shara White, Callum Reesby, Nabiha Israd, Samantha Johnson.

NZIS Practical

Linwood College students attended an expo at the New Zealand Institute of Sport (NZIS) in Riccarton, run by the senior students there who are completing their Level 5 and 6 Diplomas. Linwood College students experienced a wide range of sport related sessions, from fitness and nutrition, to injury prevention and training.

Proactive Drive

Gateway students at Linwood College have access to free 3 on 1 driving lessons with Proactive Drive, who also delivered driver safety lessons in class at school.

Mate Talatonu

Ex-student Mate returned to talk about what it was like to study at Ara. She started with a Level 3 Business Administration course, and has now completed her Level 4 Business Admin course. She now wants to head to Otago for the Health Sciences course with a view of getting into a career in Pharmacy.

Richmond Community Volunteers

Through the Gateway programme, students were encouraged to develop their skills by going out into the community and volunteering with local organisations. Linwood College students worked with the Richmond Community Gardens group, revitalising the red zone areas along the Avon/Ōtākaro. These experiences build their CVs, allow them to give back to their community, and help build their skills working with and along side adults in a positive environment.

Callum Reesby, seen here on the left working at Noel Leeming on Moorhouse Avenue. This placement allowed Callum to work as part of a large team in a complex retail and technology environment. Whilst not necessarily Callum’s ultimate career pathway, it nevertheless helped him build great skills for the workplace like customer service skills, team work skills, communication skills and many more.
