Summer Tournament Week

Week 9 of term 1 was Secondary School Summer Tournament Week. Linwood College had teams entered in touch, volleyball and league nines.

The South Island touch competition started the week. This was held out at Sheldon Park in Belfast. The students played teams from South Otago, Motueka, Riccarton, Cashmere and Wakatipu. Their final game came down to the last minute where Wakatipu scored to take the game. Linwood College finished 6th overall in the South Island.

Volleyball was next to head to competition, held at Pioneer Stadium over 3 days. The senior girls' team played schools from around the South Island,  including teams from Wakatipu and Dunedin. They went through 4 pool games not losing a set.  At the start of play-offs, Linwood played Papanui, a very close game which Papanui won. Our girls finished strongly, winning over St Margaret's to take out 3rd place.

League nines was held out on the new rugby league fields at Ngā Puna Wai. The students played other schools from within the Canterbury region with the West Coast teams not being able to make it because of the weather and road closures.  During the four round robin games the team only lost one to St Thomas, with wins over Haeata, Lincoln and Hornby. The final was Linwood College vs St Thomas, who had won the competition for the last four years. Both teams played hard and it was all locked up 14 - 14 with 2 minutes to go. Linwood College then broke the line and scored the winning try. Canterbury Rugby League also awarded the MVP of the tournament to Kyle Amer. Well done to Kyle and the Linwood College league nines team.

Linwood Jammers Shine on Stage

On 22 June our Year 7 and 8 competitive jump jam team competed at the All Stars competition. We spent the afternoon getting ready at school, getting into costume, doing hair and make up, then headed to the Aurora Centre. Our team was in the hardest category for the Year 7’s and 8’s, and boy the standard was high! Although, we didn’t place we picked up 4 awards – merit in technical execution, excellence in costuming, merit in creative formations and excellence in sportsmanship. Our team had it together on stage, sharp moves, great extension, well timed and we even compensated well with two team members down minutes before going on stage! I was so proud of them!

Hockey Season Comes To An End

20190827_134104.jpg

I am writing this as the humble driver of the Linwood College hockey team. This year, playing in the mixed, 6 a-side division.

The team is coached each week at school by John Radovonich, ex-captain of the New Zealand Black Sticks. Every Wednesday we go to the game and the students put their whole hearts into playing a game of hockey - supporting and encouraging each other, coached by John and yelled at and driven by me!

The team is absolutely amazing. The diversity in the group of players is great; ages, ability, fitness etc. This does not stop them playing hard! In fact, it makes them play harder as they want to do their best for the team. All student encourage each other, support each other, give advice to each other and help each other do their best. They joke and have fun but take the game seriously. This shows in their growth and development of leadership and skill in the game.

Wednesday the 22nd of August was our final game of the season. We finished it off with dinner out after the game. We dined at Try Out Vietnamese which is where captain Kane Tahu works part time. It was a fantastic dinner! Sponsered by Fordbaker Valation Ltd and attended by our team, John and his wife.

What a fantastic season the hockey team had! Looking forward to seeing where we go next year.

Senior A Basketball Competes

at the South Island Tournament

Kimihia te Mātauranga basketball performed well at the South Island tournament. The team could certainly hold their heads up high after the successful tournament.

In term 4 the Linwood College Senior A basketball team participated at the Secondary Schools South Island basketball tournament in Greymouth.

Firstly, we want to thank all those that supported the team to be able to go to this tournament. We could not have attended with out the support of our teachers, whānau and community.

The Linwood College Senior A basketball team that participated in the tournament only had 4 seniors in the team. The other 6 boys were all juniors, showing the future of Linwood College basketball is in good hands.

The team was placed in the 'group of death' with defending champions Hillmorton High School, the eventual 5th placed finishing Kavanagh College, and Rangiora New Life who placed 5th last year and qualified for nationals.

After leading Hillmorton for the first half, Linwood College could not hang on and lost the game to Hillmorton. Later that evening, the team played Rangiora New Life. After a last minute come back win earlier in the season against Rangiora New Life, we knew this would be a close game. Linwood College eventually pulled away to take the win.

The next morning the team played a very strong Kavanagh College who were too good as we could just not close the gap after getting into a 10 point deficit early. This is a team we could have beat if we played to our potential.

Linwood College then went on to win all of their remaining games to finish 9th.

The team enjoyed a visit to the pools, Castle Hill, and helping with the cooking and team building activities led to joy and laughter. The team had the time of their life.

Captain Jayden Bamford was the MVP of the team during the tournament, playing through a painful heel injury to lead the team. Josh Galang, Zarkeigh Tonihi and Jared Longos were the other stand out players from the tournament.

Well done Linwood College Senior A basketball.

Koru Games a Huge Success for Kimihia te Mātauranga

Our Year 7 and 8's participated in the Koru Games. They played kī-o-rahi for three days and represented our kura extremely well.

Our students played with joy, energy, sportsmanship and showed a huge amount of whanaungatanga and manaakitanga during our three days at the Koru Games playing kī-o-rahi.

I could not have been more impressed with our students as Matiu Carruth and Kiara Poi did an excellent job as captains for the two teams, both growing in their leadership.

Our students played so many games and won a lot of them. They ended up playing each other for 9th out of 20 teams. They ended up having a draw and both finished 9th equal. It was a great way to finish the tournament. There was also a staff vs students game where the students played the adults. Our own sports coordinator, Jade Cull was tremendous as our kaitiaki, defending the tupu, and even scored a great try. Mr Harding also participated and scored multiple times.

Our students made friendships with students from other schools, were playing with other students during the down time in between games and were so lovely to be around over the three days. They started friendly games with Te Waka Unua on their own agency to build friendships and have fun. Tarquin Tata made the tournament team as well which was great as he improved so much and was a great role-model over the three days.

Further Success in Pool Competitions

On September 21st and 22nd, the South Island Schools Pool Competition was held.

Both were long days, starting at 8.30 am and ending around 3 pm. On the first day four LCO students, Shayden and Bryson McKenzie, Ben Broomhall and Blair Williams took part in the pairs. Both teams played well and Shayden and Bryson went on to win the pairs competition against tough opposition from two sisters from Geraldine who were Year 12 and Year 13. Shayden and Bryson are Year 10 and Year 7.

The following day the four were joined by Jamie Platt-Watters. Again, all players competed with skill and great attitude. Shayden ended the day facing the same Year 12 girl he had played in the doubles. She had just recently won the South Island Open Women's Championship. Shayden won four frames to one in a best of seven final.

Junior Girls’ Volleyball

Linwood College Junior Girls Volleyball team had a great time at the Canterbury Junior Volleyball tournament in week 5 of term 4, finishing 10th overall from 30 junior girls teams.

This was the first tournament our girls had participated in, so was a steep learning curve for us all. The girls were in Division 1 which meant they played some pretty tough teams. It was great to see them improve

each time they played. Thanks to Mr Hoffman for his great coaching and support for the team, and to Vicki and Ms Koop who were learning as well! Also, thanks to Jade Cull for her support with the organisation.

We were so proud of the girls: how they played and how they conducted themselves on and off the court.

British Lions League Visit

With the British Lions vs Kiwi's League game being in Christchurch, some of the Lions players took time out of their day to come and visit some students at Linwood College.

On Thursday the 7th November, four players from the British Lions League team came in and spent the morning talking to and running drills for some students at Linwood College. Players in attendance were Lachlan Coote, George Williams, Blake Austin and Jake Trueman.

The students got to know the players through the Q and A session at the start, with some really well thought out questions asked and a bit of banter about games that the students had watched them play and the up coming game against the Kiwi's. This was followed by a skills session outside, which the league players ran with the help of Dom Tala from Canterbury Rugby League.

At the conclusion the students had opportunity to get signatures and photos with the players.

Senior Kī-O-Rahi

The senior kī-o-rahi team has had a successful year once again. In what is the end of an era as the majority of the team will be graduating at season's end, this team can be proud of the success they have had these past few years.

The team retained the Canterbury Kī-o-Rahi Series Trophy after going unbeaten once again. This is now the third year in a row the trophy will remain at Linwood College.

At the Matariki tournament on the last day of term 2, the team went undefeated through pool play and made it to the final as they looked to defend the title. Te Pā o Rākaihautū was the opponent and the game

finished in a draw. After the over time period was finished, the game was still tied. It went to a penalty shoot out in which Te Pā o Rākaihautū edged out winners by a score of 3-2. Mapu Uasi and Nevaeh Pirikahu-Waata both made the tournament team. This rōpū has been together for three years now and in that time has lost only two games during the entire 3 year period at all South Island Competitions. Both losses were in a final. A huge achievement. Thank you to our departing players for all you have given the team over the last few years.

Under 20's Basketball Season

What a season for the Linwood College Under 20's Basketball team, finishing 4th in Division 2. This is a huge achievement as only two years ago, Linwood College finished last in Division 2. Last year a climb up to 6th place and this year finishing 4th and making the semi-finals.

After starting the season strong with early season victories over Te Pā o Rākaihautū, Hagley College, Haeata, Kaiapoi and Rangiora New Life, the team was well positioned for qualifying for the semi-finals. Within that hot start to the season, the team came up against the eventual champions Catholic Cathedral College and lost in a tight game that came right down to the last few moments.

Jayden Bamford was awarded MVP of the team for the second consecutive year as he led the team in points, rebounds, steals, blocks, field goal percentage and three-point percentage. Joshua Galang also played extremely well this season as he led the team in assists. Zarkeigh Tonihi and Josh O'Connor shared the award for Most Improved Player.

It was great to have so much young talent coming through this season as Zarkeigh Tonihi, Josh O'Connor, Koro Marshall, Earl Banawa and West Te Awhe are all Year 10 or below which bodes well for the future of the team.

The team played great at the South Island Tournament as Jayden Bamford, Zarkeigh Tonihi, Jared Longos and Josh Galang played key roles in each game.

Highlights from the season from coach, Mr Jesse Harding, included the 16 point come-back win at Kaiapoi when Jayden Bamford and Boppy Halaifonua made clutch baskets at the end to win the game, Jayden Bamford's game-winning lay-up against Rangiora New Life as well as the South Island Tournament. Well done on a great season, Linwood College Under 20's Basketball Team.

New Zealand Under 63kg

Boxing Champion 2019

cmIQQfhGYLXNgUC9c9tXcIbraxhKboY9SxhFW2Lq

Hamuera Tainui is a Year 10 student at Linwood College and is our 2019 sportsperson of the year.

This is our highest and most prestigious award to be given in sport. It is not very often a junior student receives this award but Hamuera has had a very successful year in his sport of boxing.

Hamuera’s season started by making the Canterbury boxing team and a trip to Moranbah in Queensland to fight against an Australian opponent in the under 63 kg division which Hamuera won. This led nicely into the New Zealand Golden Gloves competition which Hamuera also won before traveling with his own club, Woolston, to Sydney. Hamuera won his semi final but lost the final against a German boxer by split decision. Hamuera then made the New Zealand development team and was back over to Melbourne to compete against the 8 times Australian champion where he lost to by split decision. While Hamuera was disappointed he didn’t win, his main focus was on the up and coming New Zealand nationals which is the biggest and most prestigious competition of the year. Hamuera talks about ‘ring rust’ and explains “it’s about getting lots of fights done in the ring to get the nerves out of your system and to be prepared and focussed on the fight you are doing, that’s why I have been fighting so much in preparation for Nationals”.

Nationals this year was in Hastings and Hamuera said he was feeling well prepared for this tournament. Come weigh in though, Hamuera was 500 gms over the weight allocation. “I put a rubbish bag on under

my hoodie and went running - it helps me to sweat and luckily I made weight”. Hamuera went on to win his first fight and was feeling good but couldn’t eat much as you guessed it - he was over the weight cut off so the rubbish bag was back on to go running again. Hamuera won his second fight by unanimous decision which took him straight into the finals. Getting ready for the finals: “I remember having butterflies in my stomach and my nerves started to kick in but all the training helped me to stay focussed”. “It was pretty cool, I got to come out to my own theme song with my name being called out which gave me a burst of adrenalin”. Hamuera reflects on the first bell going and being jabbed in the head by his opponent. “After that happened, all my nerves went away and I wanted to win”. After the fight was over Hamuera said it was a split decision and when they called out his name that he won he was so happy “I even did a dance. I was so happy afterwards I rang my mum and dad straight away, they are my biggest supporters. My mum is like my manager and I wouldn’t be able to do all I do with out her and my dad is the master mind that is always there behind me”.

Hamuera said he loves boxing, “It’s in my blood, my dad and my uncle were boxers. At my gym there is a wall of fame and now I get to be up there with my dad and that’s pretty mean”.

Hamuera said that he trains about four times a week in the gym plus running and leading up to fights it increases to about six times a week. Hamuera’s next goals are to make the Canterbury and New Zealand development teams again along with defending his title.

Linwood College is proud of Hamuera, his dedication, commitment and achievement in boxing.

Football/Futsal

It was another successful year for the senior football team, with the team performing well in the summer futsal competition and the winter 11 aside competition.

After losing a number of key players after the end of 2018, there was the assumption that 2019 would need to be a rebuilding year. The team never got that message however, and went into the season wanting to win and build on last year's success of winning the division two final in outdoor 11-aside.

As always, we started the year competing in the Mainland futsal league at English Park. This year the team went unbeaten in this competition, and won the final 8-1. This was a huge accomplishment, with some strong teams from Papanui and Darfield involved in the competition. The outdoor 11-aside competition started well, with us winning the first game against Hillmorton 14-1. Pritesh scored an impressive 6 goals in this game, and Jack Triggs a further 4. Our star goal keeper, David Siumu, even managed a goal in the last minutes of the game. This was

followed up by a more competitive win against Middleton Grange where the match ended 9-6 at full time, after being 6-6 at half time. Jack Triggs scored another hat trick in this game.

After this we experienced mixed results with injuries and illness to key players, and our captain Jack Triggs being away on a camp for a number of weeks. We scraped into the semi finals on goal difference, however lost to a very impressive Kaiapoi High School team in the semi final (who went unbeaten and went onto win the division). Pritesh Nair finished as our top scorer for the season with 12 goals. Jack Triggs was close behind with 8 goals, and Abdullah Wahidi also contributed 8 goals. Special thanks go to Jack Triggs, who served as captain this year, and Ethan Moscrop-Giblin and Orion Lynch who served as vice captains. They were important in organising and running the team. I look forward to seeing what the team can accomplish in 2020.

Linwood Girls' Rugby Team

20190619_153926.jpg

This year the Linwood girls' rugby team combined with Haeata. There were many girls who had not played before and as a team we had a lot to learn. Whilst many did not have rugby skills at the start they made up for this with their tenacity and enthusiasm. The girls played extremely well over the course of the competition and improved immensely from the start of the season to the end. Special mention goes to Taylor Bamford who made the U18 Canterbury Girls' Development team.

In week 7 of term 4 the South Island Junior Volleyball Champs were held in Christchurch at Cowles and Pioneer Stadiums.

Linwood College entered two teams into this tournament - junior boys and junior girls.

Over the three days the teams played schools from around the South Island and also some teams from Australia. The boys played Upwey High School and the girls played Maribyrnong College, both schools are from Melbourne.

There were early morning and late evening games which made for very long days. Our Linwood College students handled this challenge well. They played with heart and demonstrated the five college values through out the tournament.
