Careers and Gateway

2020. What a year. With the changes to local and global economy, travel, and employment sectors due to the Covid-19 pandemic, students have had to rethink options, pathways and careers. What do you do if you always wanted to become a flight attendant, knowing that so many have been laid off and are working in supermarkets or retraining as carpenters? Where are the part-time jobs within a tightening economy, especially with many of the bigger employers reducing their workforce numbers? Who will pick the berries in Geraldine, now that overseas workers can not enter the country for seasonal work?

Despite the reduction in opportunities for students to do work experience, we’ve had some great work placements across a variety of industries. Barista, building, brewing, beauty, and bakery - and that’s just the Bs!

The Red Shirts programme at The Warehouse has provided valuable work experience for our students. Yashna Devi, Leah Yates and Jasmine Keating completed this programme, gaining 24 Level 2 credits and a Service IQ Customer Service award.

Here’s Seth Ewans and Zach Swinton with their Service IQ awards for the same programme, and Shanil Chand, Yashna Devi and Majenta Brown with theirs.

In a first for us here at Linwood College, we had Darcy Blumers getting some valuable experience with a great local craft brewery, Two Thumb Brewing Co. He worked through the process of brewing beer from start to finish - and getting a taste of what the industry is really like.

Vocational Pathways - Getting Ahead with a Trade

This year, Blake Stiles is the recipient of the Prime Minister’s Vocational Excellence Award, a prize recognising a student who has excelled in vocational training. This award highlights the importance of trades training in Aotearoa, and showcases the great career pathways available in these professions.

Blake has been awarded this prize for excelling in his construction courses at school and at the Ara Institute of Technology on the dual enrolment programme, and has also been offered a full-time apprenticeship with a great local company, John Garlick Builders, through our Gateway programme. This award also comes with a cash prize of $2,000 for Blake to use on starting out on his career in the construction industry.
