'We are the World' Cultural Celebration
On 28 October our English Language Learning Department arranged a fantastic show of unity in the 'We are the World' cultural celebration. It was a perfect day to sit under a tree and have all our cultures celebrated.
The English Language Learning Department hosted a cultural event, ‘We Are The World’. The event was an opportunity for LCŌ students to showcase their own unique cultures, while reflecting on their role in shaping a future of inclusion, tolerance and acceptance of all cultural groups that call New Zealand home. The event kicked off with a sausage sizzle, followed by a flag parade, with flag bearers representing 54 countries, dressed in their beautiful traditional dress. Traditional dances performed by our students from the Philippines, Samoa, Fiji, and India were the highlight of the event, while Alan the clown, Strawberry Fairy, and Lily Pea Fairy added glamour and colour to celebrations.
Fia Fia Night

Ngā Mātāiwi Haka Festival
This year’s Kimihia Kapa Haka group was a combination of students from a variety of schools across Christchurch. The students trained for 7-8 weeks to perform at the Ngā Mātāiwi festival which was held on Friday 13 November at Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Whānau Tahi. The day was split into two parts, with kapa haka being performed in the morning and sports such as kī-o-rahi and netball in the afternoon. The day was glorious, the students had fun, ahakoa ngā piki me ngā heke ko te mea nui ko te aroha ki te kaupapa.
Kapa Haka Performs at Senior Prizegiving
Eleventh of November 2020 was the senior awards where the students celebrated their final years of high school. Many students, teachers, and parents came together to celebrate the Linwood College students as they took their final departure at Linwood College at Ōtakaro. On the night we had cultural performances such as the Kimihia Kapa Haka group and the Linwood College Polyfest Group. As the night moved on, we listened to speeches from the head students who said their final farewells. As the night came to an end, all the prizes were awarded, the last karakia was said and then everyone gathered in the staff room for light refreshments.
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori - Education Perfect
Kia ora my name is Jasmine Keating.
In September of this year during Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori language week) I was fortunate enough to compete in a national competition hosted by Education Perfect who are an organisation committed to enhancing the education experience of students in New Zealand. 406 different schools participated which drew entries from approximately 12,000 students. The competition was held to celebrate Te Reo Maori and required students to answer questions posed in Te Reo with answers in Te Reo. I was successful in answering over 5,000 questions which ranged from “What is the Māori word for yellow” to completing sentence structures. As the winning entrant I won a $100 prezzy gift voucher, a tāhei pounamu necklace, a certificate noting my accomplishments, and a 1 year, full suite subscription to Education Perfect online resources for 2021.
