Madi Burnett
It was unfortunate that we had to say goodbye to Madi at the end of term 3. Madi joined us at the beginning of the year and learners enjoyed the sense of fun and positivity she brought into the classroom.
Chris Houghton
Chris came to us towards the tail end of term 3, knowing that he would always be returning to his position at Catholic Cathedral College in 2021. Throughout his short time here, Chris has worked hard to form relationships with our ākonga and having him in the department has been hugely appreciated.
Brian Johnson
We are also sad to say goodbye to Brian who chose to work at Linwood for the first two years of his career. Passionate about Digital Learning and Design, Brian worked in both departments during his first year, before becoming fully part of the English Department in 2020. We will miss Brian’s friendly face around the place and wish him all the best for the future.
Emma Bradley
Emma taught with us for approximately 15 years in the Technology department. She taught Engineering, DVC and Hard Materials in addition to being a Dean. She left us half way through the year to take up a position at Canterbury University teaching students how to use machinery.

Another chapter in my life
It’s been 50 years since I first entered education. On that day, as I wide-eyed 17 year old fresh faced teacher, did I ever think that I would spend the next 50 years working with children?
During this time, I’ve had the pleasure and privilege to influence the lives of thousands of children from 5 year olds through to 15 year olds. Also, during this period I’ve had the privilege to work with some amazing and inspiring professionals.
My career started in Christchurch at Windsor School (which is now Waitakiri). I spent three years working in a small school in South Taranaki before moving to Hanmer Springs School as their first and only Deputy Principal. At this
time country service was a requirement for all teachers to fulfil. It is also, important to point out that myself and my peers were in the unique position of being paid as we trained. That has long since vanished from our system.
From Hanmer Springs, I moved to Darfield Primary as Deputy Principal, and Acting Principal. This time also included a year in Japan teaching English in junior high schools across the Hitachi school district in Ibaraki Prefecture. Later, I took on principalship of a small school outside Darfield. A slight career change saw me teach mathematics at Lincoln High School, Christchurch Girls’ High School, and now Linwood College.
I have given a lot to education and teaching, but they, in turn, have provided me with some fantastic experiences, allowed me to meet and interact with some amazing young children and young people, and above all, have provided me with a treasure trove of memories which I will cherish for the rest of my life.
I’d like to finish with this thought provoking quote -
“Learning is creation, not consumption. Knowledge is not something a learner absorbs, but something a learner creates.” - George Couros
Andi Darby
We also said goodbye to Andi Darby this year, who has taken on a position at Rolleston College. Andi had been at Linwood for 12 years, starting as a beginning teacher when she arrived. We wish her all the best for her the next steps in her career, the English department will not be the same without her.
Lena Tuiloma
A massive thank you to Lena for all the hard work she put in to both our ākonga, whanau and wider community. She gave a lot of her time and energy to our Pacifica community and was passionate about ensuring positive outcomes for these learners and all learners within LCŌ. She was a well respected teacher and colleague of many and she will be greatly missed.
Sharon Te Ngaru
Sharon joined LCŌ at the beginning of Term 3 2019 as a Literacy/Numeracy teacher in our Learning Acceleration area of the school. Initially she worked with groups of readers from mainly Year 7 and 8. In 2020, Sharon's role changed as we welcomed new ākonga into Linwood College and Sharon became our Specialist Teacher, supporting ākonga in the
Sally Easton
Sally was a Health and Physical Education teacher at Linwood College for three terms this year. During this time Sally taught Health and Physical Education from Year 7-11. We are very grateful for Sally's contribution to our learning area. We have enjoyed the kōrero and fresh perspective Sally brought and we wish her all the best for her next endeavour, we are sure we will see Sally again in the future.
Te Pai Tawhiti programme. Sharon also taught the Year 7, 8 and 9 Taku Ara Pono groups. One of the things that Sharon will be most remembered for is the cooking she and the ākonga did throughout the year in TAP.
Kimberly Baars
Kimberley taught a combination of mechatronics and robotics in what was previously the “metal” room at the Technology Centre. She will be remembered by students for her zeal and passion.
Kimberley moved to Auckland immediately after we moved out of lockdown. We wish Kim and her family all the best for the future.
Dale McKnight
Dale planned to retire but kindly came out of retirement to fill the gap when we required a staff member in Fabrics for one day a week. She also willingly came to our aid when we needed a reliever, often changing her plans to do so.
Dale’s commitment and dedication to her students and fabrics programmes has been amazing. She readily shares
her expertise and is always looking for improved ways of doing things to engage the students.
Dale started her teaching career at New Brighton Manual Training Centre and followed this with raising a family, teaching in Southland, at Papanui High School and Philipstown Technology Centre, that has subsequently been known as Te Waka Unua and now Linwood College Technology Centre.
Dale is a talented person with a wonderful toolkit of skills that the Centre has always benefited from. Organisation is her middle name and she has been a wonderful ‘go to’ person for advice and guidance.
The client school staff and students hold Dale in high regard.
Dale will be greatly missed. We wish her a relaxing, fun filled retirement doing all the things she loves the most.
Norma Hubbard
Norma taught in the Foods room at the Technology Centre. She is retiring after a lifetime of teaching and will be remembered as a teacher who cared deeply about her students.
We wish her well in her retirement.
Christine Hamilton
Christine taught Creative CAD and has been instrumental in setting up the laser cutter at the Technology Centre. She will be remembered for the innovations she brought to the area that was previously “plastics”.
Christine is moving to Chisnallwood Intermediate and we wish her well for the next stage or her career.
Robyn Hudson
We are sad to be fare welling Robyn this year, who is moving into a well-deserved retirement. She is a highly professional, hard-working and respected member of staff, who has given many years of energetic service to Linwood College.
Robyn was the Head of Department in Food and Fabric, a role that she filled with dedication. She is a long-standing
Robyn Johansen
Robyn has earned her retirement after teaching continuously for 43 years as a Home Economics teacher, teaching all levels from Year 6 to 13 Foods and Fabrics.
The last 10 of these as Team Leader, Food and Fabrics, at our Technology Centre. Her time at the Centre has been challenged by earthquakes, school closures, leadership changes, curriculum changes, retirements, staff changes to name a few.
Her passion, dedication and professionalism kept the department functioning exceptionally well. Updating programmes as curriculum changed and keeping ahead with new approaches and trends within Foods and Fabrics helped our centre focus on a high standard of delivery for our client schools.
Through Robyn’s last 10 years as HoD at our centre we have felt supported both as permanent staff members and as relieving teachers. We were able to deliver up to date programmes and keep up with the many new innovations in our teaching methods and use of high quality resources and equipment made this possible. The students were very lucky and so were we as teachers.
Robyn led by example with meticulous planning and preparation of resources and lessons thus allowing every student of any level achieve their very best result.
The children left technology with pride made possible by a well organised well-resourced professional department with Robyn supporting and leading our team.
Happy retirement.
member of HETTANZ, and very active in moving the Home Economics and Textiles teaching areas forward. Robyn set up the Breakfast Club at Linwood College, which has provided over 10,000 breakfasts each year to hungry students. Robyn was also responsible for setting up Café 13 and training baristas making coffee and hot drinks for staff and students.
Robyn’s immaculate, put-together and iconic style has always stood out at Linwood College. She will be missed by students and staff alike.
