This has been a very successful year for many of the students at Kimihia. They are now in a position to feel confident about their future and can show their own child how to be successful when the time is right. Congratulations to Shalenah on the birth of her baby girl Cayatana. I would like to wish Veronica, Maddison, Nakisha and Sarah all the best for the birth of their new babies in the New Year. Staff and students have enjoyed a happy year together, and I have highlighted some of our experiences in 2020 below.

Our Community Collaboration

The barista team have been very busy each week raising money to enable them to go on trips at the end of the year. Thanks to our Early Learning Centre and the Bird and Animal Hospital staff for their support. James has also been developing a community garden project with the Kimihia students and the children at the ELC. This has been an inspiring collaborative project supported by Radhika and the rest of the ELC staff.

Health and Wellbeing

Kimihia has maintained a focus on being a Smoke-Free and Water Only school. We also provide Yoga on Monday

morning to support the girls with their wellbeing and health. Our garden has been developed this year, and we have had many salads made by the girls to go with our Friday lunches. Towards the end of the year we were invited to participate in aqua natal classes at Pioneer Stadium. This was great for fitness and health. We went to Karanga Mai Young Parents College in Kaiapoi to participate and mix with like-minded students.

Trips this Year

The weather has been very warm this year, and earlier in the year we made a few trips to Sumner Beach. In term three, the Student Council decided we should go up the gondola and have a picnic. This was a fabulous trip with expansive views around Christchurch.

Culture

The culture group have continued to be instructed by Vai and Jemma this year. We thank them for their efforts and have enjoyed the singing the girls have performed at the end of term celebrations.

Welcome to new staff in 2020

Yvonne Ponting is our new Office Manager and our van driver twice a day. She has been a great support in her role to both staff and students.

Lirry Carter joined us this year to be a youth support for Kimihia students. She has helped with finances, housing, visa applications, course choices, campus visits and preschool visits. This has been a great opportunity for Lirry to expand her own strengths and knowledge. The students have really enjoyed her input this year.

Irene Ingram, our newest van driver has been a great asset to our team. She has been a very caring and conscientious driver every day.

It has been great to see all students having success with NCEA this year. I again congratulate James and Bianca for their continued dedication to improving the students’ lives and their qualifications.

A big thank you also goes out to Dick Edmundson, Principal of Linwood College, for his support, Allison our nurse, Esther our counsellor, Dan our Careers Liaison and Jean our Tourism teacher.

We also thank the Early Learning Centre Manager Radhika, and all her staff, for the care of the children and the mothers from Kimihia.

Thanks to Rata Foundation for their financial support of Kimihia.

I look forward to welcoming all the returning students, babies, children and staff for a successful 2021.
