Social Sciences

What a year! The year started with enthusiasm and excitement. Lukas Davidson had joined the team to help with teaching Business and the remaining staff Ethan Smith, Kate Munro, Sig Koop, Hannah Ewing, Larisha Toomey and myself (Richard Jolly) were prepared and ready to go. Plans were finalising for the big trip to Vietnam. Then along came Covid. The trip to Vietnam had to be cancelled and our normal education outside the classroom activities rescheduled. Nonetheless, we made most of the situation.

On the 16th of March, 15 enthusiastic geography students and 2 very excited Social Science teachers (Mr Jolly and Ms Munro) drove about 300 km in Linwood College’s new vans to visit Arthur’s Pass for the day. We spent the day exploring some of the limestone formations, and glaciated landscapes before having lunch at Arthur’s Pass township.

We had been studying sustainability and use of 1080 to manage pest species in New Zealand, and visited the DOC centre. We went for a punishing walk called 'Devil’s Punchbowl' where we were rewarded with fresh air, native forest galore, and the waterfalls themselves. Other visitors were treated to LCŌ’s spontaneous photo-shoot session at the viewing platform. Beautiful weather, great learning, and a fabulous bunch of young people representing Linwood College so well! Big thanks to Mr Richard Jolly and the Level 1 Geography class for a great day!

Excellence in Year 13 Business

2020 saw another range of interesting products created by the Year 13 Linwood Business students competing in the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise competition. Abdullah Wahidi, Paigan-Lilly Hall, Josh Stiles and Luka Russell were one of the teams who experienced success throughout the year with their company Asiana. For their project they created a children's book 'A Trip Around the World' designed to promote diversity amongst young readers and to 'say no to racism'.

The first print run of the book flew off the shelves resulting in a sell out within 2 weeks. The book was also purchased and placed in several libraries around Christchurch. Their success was picked up in the national media which is testament to the uniqueness of their product and vision. The news article can be found on the following link:

Additionally, they were presented with the excellence award for customer and market engagement at the Young Enterprise regional finals last week. It's been an amazing year for these students and we would like to congratulate them on all their hard work and the success that has come with it. Asiana would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the teachers and businesses that supported them on their journey along with their business mentor, Sunita Gautam.

Halaya, another Year 13 Business team also attracted local media attention with their Hokey Pokey Jelly flavoured drink, blending a classic kiwi flavour with a traditional Filipino treat. And for the second year in a row, Linwood College was recognised for Excellence at the Young Enterprise regional finals with Asiana being presented with the Excellence award for Customer and Market Engagement. It's been an amazing year for these students and we would like to congratulate them for all their hard work and the success that has come with it.

Young Enterprise

A cold wet day didn't dampen the year nine business students' spirits as they set up for their market day.

The range of food the students put together was superb with sweet treats, drinks and even some cultural Samoan delights on offer. Not even a broken down candy floss machine could get in the way for one group who changed to popcorn last minute. There were successes and some hiccups along the way but overall an enjoyable day was had by all. The event was well supported by hungry students and teachers at the school resulting in a sell out and tidy profit for the students. A big thank you to the parents who helped with some of the food preparations and to all those that supported us on the day.

Year 10 Business Challenge

At the beginning of December we held our annual Year 10 business challenge. In groups students came up with a product they would like to market and produced a marketing plan, budget, logo etc. At the end of the three days they pitched this plan to judges.

The 50 students who participated gained a lot of business experience from this and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

History

Year 12 History Goes to the Flicks

The Level 2 History class went to the movie theatre at the end of June to watch a historical film based on a true story about the Rwandan Genocide.

Learning more about their current history topic, popcorn and pizza made the learning experience even better. Thank you to Lumière Cinemas for welcoming our ākonga.

History Close Up: War in the Pacific

In August our Level 3 History class took their study about the war in the Pacific out of the classroom to explore the Godley Heads gun emplacements, the exhibits of Wigram Airforce Museum including a presentation on the Japanese threat to New Zealand, and an historical film screening of the battle of Iwo Jima at Lumière Cinemas. Home-made chocolate cake and pizza were well received, and fog rolling in from the sea gave our visit to Godley Head some additional awe.

A big thank you to Peter Wilkens, Historian at the Godley Head Trust, for a very informative and engaging guided tour, the educational team at Wigram Airforce Museum, particularly for the insight of your archives, and Lumière Cinemas for welcoming us again. A big thank you also to our wonderful ākonga for their outstanding engagement, which owed them a message of thanks from our host at Godley Head.
