Drama
Late-summer Dramarama
In term 1, our combined Drama course of Levels 1 and 3 was brimming with talented actors. The last week of the term had students taking part in the assessment of their techniques which was named, "A Latesummer Night's Dream", due to most of the plays being based on Shakespearean drama, with a strong Kiwi interpretation to them. This involved the students performing using voice, body movement and use of space. The theatre was packed and the students performed excellently.
Meanwhile, the Level 2 Music and Drama class were busy creating their own company. The focus of the term was devised with a theme of "change." The students took on this challenge with enthusiasm and interest. The Music students created music for the play and the Drama students wrote the script centred around a world where females are prejudiced against males and takes place over two time periods.
Year 9 Drama Commedia Del’Arte Masks
In term 2 the Year 9 Drama students designed and constructed masks and characters based on the Italian theatre form Commedia Del’Arte.
Designs by Elijah Rasmussen, Donna Enosa, Ava Best and Alice Ross.
Year 12 Drama and Music Students Try a New Type of Theatre
In term 2 our combined Music and Drama class created a piece of Brechtian or Epic theatre which involves set episodic dramas with music to punch home the issues the play raised. Music and plays were all performed live on stage.
Year 12 Drama
I will not give power to the thing that happened this year and last year that has put Performing Arts on the back foot. Instead I will gloat about my wonderful group of Year 12 students.
At the beginning of the year students found their combined Drama and Music class had challenges, but also advantages. This group of wonderful students has strived to understand the performing arts on a deeper level and will be better off for it in the future. Their final performance showed the growth that has happened with this group and I can't wait to see what they achieve next year.
Year 7-10 Drama
There has been a great deal going on in Drama this year. The Year 7 and 8 groups have been looking at expressing emotions using the movie Inside Out.
My Year 9 and 10 groups have been looking at creating characters
using SFX make-up and devise, which is creating Drama. The first Year 10 group also dabbled in the dark side by doing scenes from the Addams Family. The second Year 10 group have been working on a pantomime type play called #thefairestofthemall. It has been a busy year.
Junior Drama
Year 11 and 13 Drama
This year has been challenging and intriguing. Having a class of students which are these two year levels had it's difficulties, however these two groups never complained about being together and just got on with the mahi. We have worked on Melodrama, Devise and creating a whole class play. Our major class production was called "Second Afterlife" by Ralph McCubbin Howell. With having to push this production back in the year it has been a crazy end of the year, but we were very pleased with the end result.
To all my Year 13's good luck in that big old world out there. I will be cheering you on!
Art
Linwood College at Ōtākaro Awarded "Creatives in Schools" Funding
Painting from a new perspective using VR technology is now possible thanks to a $15,000 grant. Thanks to the Creatives in Schools funding, LCŌ hosted Dr Claire Hughes (PhD Fine Arts ) as our 'Creative in Schools' artist for Term 1 and 2. Dr Hughes, within her own practice, uses digital technologies to create animated artworks that explore a mixture of science and movement.
Our project was to use virtual reality and Tilt Brush to create artworks that respond to the students' own ideas and themes. Students "paint" using the software while working with a virtual reality headset.
This project is open to learners across the school community, not just Visual Art students.
Year 9 Art Gallery Visit
The Year 9 Art class visited Christchurch City Art Gallery Te Puna O Waiwhetū in March.
This field trip engaged students in the wider contexts of art, and also introduced them to the gallery, which, as a public space, they are encouraged to visit at any time.
The exhibition that the students were focused on was Te Wheke: pathways across Oceania. InTe Reo Māori "te wheke" means octopus. Octopuses are renowned for being explorers and inquisitive by nature.
The theme of this exhibition is around navigation and exploration, created by artists from the Oceania region, and also included items curated and loaned from the museum.
The students had a workbook to complete that encouraged them to engage with the meanings and wider contexts of the artworks.
Doris Lusk Reserve: Interactive Artwork for Children
As part of the Regenerate Christchurch projects, the Christchurch City Council has sought submissions for a public artwork for the Doris Lusk Reserve in Linwood Village on Stanmore Road.
The brief was for an artwork that was interactive and playful, child centric and designed to bring families into the reserve, and bring life to the village.
Doris Lusk was a significant New Zealand painter in the 70s. She was also an art educator. It was only fitting three of our Linwood College young female art students sat on the selection panel to provide input to honour Doris with this artwork.
Chelsea Smith, Maia Henderson, and Alice Ross attended the selection panel held at the East Linwood Gallery in the Linwood Village.
All the young woman represented LCŌ well and contributed thoughtful and insightful feedback. They spoke with confidence to a room full of adults. The girls were rewarded with $50 vouchers to Gordon Harris in thanks for their contributions.
Senior Art Gallery Trip
On Wednesday the 2nd of June, all of our senior art, painting and photography students visited a range of galleries and exhibitions around Christchurch. We visited Ralph Hotere’s exhibition at the Christchurch Art Gallery, The Central, Chambers Gallery, Jonathan Smart Gallery, The Den and
PG Gallery 192.
This was a fantastic opportunity for students to see a range of different artists' work, and to inspire their own art making when they return to class.
Indian Ink
Year 9 Visual Art students have been exploring drawing in different ways, to extend their ideas about drawing. These are some of the drawings that the Year 9's have made using indian ink and objects they have found around school.
Art Portfilios
Students in Level 1 Art, Levels 2 and 3 Painting and Levels 2 and 3 Photography have been working hard during term 4 to get their portfilios ready. These are a collection of their best works and are sent off for external marking by NZQA markers.
Music
Below are some video clips of students performing. The talent we have is incredible.
