Careers and Gateway

Another interesting year with ups and downs and interruptions, but we’ve seen some great successes too, with students taking up incredible opportunities and seeking new experiences. Some of the highlights include:

ServiceIQ Red Shirts/Blue Shirts/Green SEEDs

Students complete the Red Shirts/Blue Shirts/Green SEEDs programme through The Warehouse/Warehouse Stationery. These students, among a number of others, completed the ServiceIQ programme of work experience through the Warehouse, gaining valuable work skills and experience to add to their CVs, as well as 23 credits towards NCEA Level 2.

Aviation Course, by Tanisha Reddy

Being part of the Gateway Aviation programme was the best highlight for 2021. While doing the Gateway Aviation I was able to see different roles and responsibilities around the different jobs in the aviation industry. We visited the Christchurch Airport, the Radar Tower, the Christchurch Airport Fire Rescue Service and the Air New Zealand facilities. I was able to put myself outside my comfort zone and meet new people and make new friends through this Gateway experience. I am also really grateful that I was able to fly Piper PA-28-161 Warrior EBC. I learned a lot from this experience and I would definitely recommend the programme to anyone who wants to learn about the aviation industry.

Aviation

The 2021 Gateway Aviation programme, which Tanisha Reddy and Zoe Busch participated in, was a mix of Aviation theory, site visits and two flying lessons. Fortunately the site visits were completed early in the year and not affected by Covid restrictions.

Aviation Course, via Gateway, by  Zoe Busch

During my last year in school, our Gateway Coordinators asked me if my prior written idea of being a pilot was still standing and up to date. After I had answered yes to that question, I was asked whether I would like to participate in this year's aviation course run by Gateway and Service IQ. With this course I completed unit standards concerning all things aviation, such as the principles of flight and structures of the aviation industry.

We went out to many different locations to do workplace visits. We went to the Fire and Rescue department, as well as the Radar Tower on site of the Christchurch Airport.

The biggest highlight for me, however, was the flying lessons. I got 4 full on learners flying lessons with the Canterbury Aeroclub. I did these lessons out on their airfield in West Melton. It went from learning pre flight checks like basic fuel testing to learning how to take off with only little help by your instructor. The course, and especially these lessons, have brought me closer not only to deciding what I want to do in the future, but also to achieving my PPL (Private Pilots Lesson) as these lessons count toward the licence.

I would recommend this course to anyone who has a passion for flying or any job in the aviation sector. It helped me figure out my future and my passions in life.

Richmond Community Gardens

A group of students worked in the Richmond Community Gardens this year, helping out across a variety of areas. This is a really great project for Linwood College students to be involved in, and they have gradually helped transform the Avonside area.

Banqer Programme

This year, students in Gateway trialled the Banqer programme to support their learning about financial literacy and capability. This programme works through all areas of personal finance, including bank accounts, debt and credit cards, Kiwisaver, flatting and home ownership, getting paid and paying tax, insurance and investing. Students really enjoyed the simulated environment and got a really good foundation in money smarts heading toward independence.

Windsorcare

Divashaal and Maansi have been outstanding in Gateway this year, working at Windsorcare in the aged care facility. They have been working across a variety of areas, including some high needs aged persons, and have shown compassion, patience, and a caring attitude. They have also completed some of their Level 3 Certificate in Health and Wellbeing, a nationally recognised qualification for working in aged care. Gene Ruiz (wife of Serge Ruiz here at Linwood College) has supported these students well throughout their placement, and we thank her for giving them such a great opportunity.

This year, in a surprising turn of events, there was an overwhelming demand for new employees, with many jobs available across Christchurch. Through the Gateway and PETT programmes, we have engaged with several recruitment agencies who are looking for great talent in a variety of jobs and roles, from one-day temporary jobs, to full-time permanent positions. We were fortunate enough to have a presentation from Nigel at Adecco, all about the recruitment process, and students were given first-hand advice on how to ensure they are ready for success in the employment process.

InZone Careers Kiosk

Master Painters, represented here by Peter Dalman, were kind enough to sponsor a brand new InZone Careers kiosk. This kiosk is an interactive careers tool, with a large range of careers content about a variety of careers. Big thanks to Peter and Master Painters for this amazing resource for our students.

InZone Careers Bus

We also had Peter and Donna from InZone Careers bring their state-of-the-art careers bus through the school for a few days. This allowed classes of students to look through a range of careers, and kick start some discussions about pathways and careers.

Students in the Fitness, Nutrition and Leadership class were treated to a day at NZIS, where they took part in a range of activities, all designed to give a glimpse into the world of sport, recreation and personal training.

Driver Licence/Lessons

With our amazing new car, we have been able to get many students their driver licences, and give some really fundamental driving lessons in those early stages. We were fortunate to get support from Stadium Cars who helped to finance the vehicle, and we have been putting it to good use.

New Course for Life Skills and Employment Confidence

This year, LCŌ introduced a new course for Year 12 students, which aims to equip students with the fundamentals of self-management and communication so they can feel confident pursuing any career path. The course is called Pre-employment Trades and Traning (PETT) and focuses on communication for employment, community participation, self-management, skills and training, and gives learners opportunities to build their confidence, literacy and social skills through experiential learning.

Throughout the year learners identified their learning goals, interacted with a wide range of people inside and outside the school while also developing their resume for the workplace and trades training. The programme seeks to ensure students are equipped to be ready for the workplace - job search skills, interview skills, a great CV, drivers license, time management, problem-solving, working in a team, and overcoming setbacks and difficult tasks. These are skills that every employer wants, regardless of the industry. This course is an alternative to Level 2 English and Level 2 English Language Learning,

but is heavily based on functional communication and workplace literacy. It is additionally beneficial to students developing self-management skills before they can be work ready.

In one learning task, students were put into groups where they had one lesson to compete in building the tallest structure using only spaghetti, string, a marshmallow and sellotape. This lesson endeavoured to foster skills and reflection on the qualities of collaboration, creativity, and problem solving. A lot of fun was had, even as some of the creations came tumbling down in the last seconds.

University of Otago Open Day

On the 23rd and 24th of May, Mr Russell and Ms Johnson took ten Year 13 students to the University of Otago Open Day. We left early Sunday morning and made it in time for the first Health Science Lecture. In the evening students were able to ask two ex-students and Ms Johnson's son about their Otago experiences over pizza.

On Monday students had to determine their own timetable of lectures and also had the opportunity to visit the Halls of Residence around campus and the Anatomy Museum in the Medical School.
