Mathematics and Statistics

Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā tatou katoa.

It has been yet another dynamic year for our Mathematics and Statistics Learning Area. Mr Wladek Czerepowicz joined our school at the start of this year, with the rest of our team consisting of Ms Francine Nijdam (HoLA), Garth Lewis (Assistant HoLA), Mr Paul Hoffman, Mr Paul Osborne,

Miss Olivia Silvester, Mr Saieeswaran Vijayakumar, and Ms Natasha Powell.

Level 2 Mathematics

In spite of the Covid-19 related challenges of 2021, our learning area has successfully provided a stable learning environment for our young people to enhance their mathematical and statistical problem-solving skills.

One of the many highlights of the year was the University of Otago Junior Mathematics Competition achievements. David Templeton achieved Distinction, which means he got in the top 15% of New Zealand.

“This year I have had the pleasure of teaching, 10MAS(10H), L2MATH and L3CALC. I have really enjoyed starting each lesson with whakawhanaungatanga, where we have shared what’s on top for us. A highlight with 10MAS(10H) was seeing students work collaboratively to solve real-life problems. Congratulations to those learners who have made it through L2MATH and L3CALC, which are highly academic courses. Wishing you all the best for 2022 and beyond!”

Class 10H

“Teaching L1MAS, L2MATH, 10C, 10A and 10E  this year has been an exceptional and interesting journey.  Developing learning relationships that hopefully impact the rest of our lives has been a great co-constructed experience. I have learnt a lot and I trust that our ākonga have too."

Mr Lewis

“I have really enjoyed taking L1ALN this year. It has been great to see all of the students' confidence and belief in themselves develop over this year. A big congratulations to the majority of students who gained Level 1 Numeracy.”

Mrs Powell

“L3 STAT contained some very switched on students who can see the long term possibilities of statistics. They really enjoyed the probability game called "Kings" in their introduction to Probability and were a pleasure to teach. I look forward to seeing many of you being successful in tertiary education and whatever other futures you pursue.

9R, 10R - It has been a pleasure to teach the students of these classes. There are many characters within the classes as well as many able and hard working students. You have all improved your mathematics skills and hopefully you are all getting closer to being able to be successful when you reach your senior years at Linwood College.

10S - When this class was on task, they produced some exciting and rewarding results. There are some very able mathematicians within the class. Virtually all students are progressing to L1MASE next year and it will be interesting to see if they live up to the promise shown in 2021.

L1MAS - A large class who deep down, absolutely love Mathematics and Statistics. As the year progressed most of the students were able to work independently and developed the confidence to seek assistance when needed.  It was a pleasure to see so many students being successful in gaining the full array of credits that were on offer.”

Mr Hoffman

“Well done to the students in L1MASE, 10L, 9L and 9C, you have made my second year of teaching exciting to say the least. Through your persistence and diligence, you have all developed as mathematicians and statisticians throughout this incredibly challenging year. I have especially enjoyed the banter and look forward to teaching some of you next year.”

Mr Vijayakumar

“It has been an absolute pleasure teaching L1MASE this year. Right from the outset there were clearly many capable mathematicians in this group and it was fantastic to see those that lacked confidence at the beginning of the year develop and flourish as the year progressed. Building close relationships with groups is always something I relish and the diversity and willingness to engage from this group meant that was such a fantastic experience this year. I wish them all well for the future.”

Mr Osborne

“One of the highlights for L2STAT this year was the topic of conducting an experiment. The students ate as many jelly beans as they could with either fingers or chopsticks. Both classes were filled with students that worked hard all the way through to the end of term 4. Awesome efforts everyone! 10A improved so much during the year, shown by many students passing their end of topic tests as the year went on. I am very proud of the progress they made. I hope Year 11 goes well for you all! 9S were a great bunch of enthusiastic students. Students enjoyed many projects such as researching famous Mathematicians, designing a zoo, and planning a theoretical trip to Wellington. They competed in Cantamaths competitions and also earned homework points throughout the year, resulting in many prizes given out.”

Class 9S

“I have really enjoyed taking 9A this year. We traversed Cartesian planes, defined patterns with algebra and measured geometric shapes with new tools. In all of our adventures we kept our numeracy skills sharp and our learning fun.”

“I have really enjoyed taking 9E this year. We had a collaborative learning experience where we found ‘x’.  Nobody knew ‘x’ was lost, but we are glad we found it. Of course, ‘x’ has a relationship with ‘y’ and we spent time looking at graphs (with ‘x’ and ‘y’ coordinates).”
