What A Year!

The year started with enthusiasm and excitement. Nicole Eastwick and Leisha Connolly joined the team to help with teaching Social Studies, History and Tourism, while the remaining staff, Ethan Smith, Kate Munro, Sig Koop, Lukas Davidson and myself (Richard Jolly) were prepared and ready to go. Plans were made to get educational trips done early in the school year, in case lockdown were to come again. The plan paid off.

Level 3 History went to Akaroa, Deans Bush, The Archives and The Airforce Museum. Level 3 Tourism went to Queenstown, and Level 2 Tourism went to Hanmer Springs and Akaroa (see below).

We were lucky enough to have Willie Apiata come and talk to some of our students.

Change of Staff

Half way through the year we had to wish Leisha Connolly farewell as she took a full time position at St Andrew’s College but we were pleased to take on Connor O’Rourke to take her place.

In term 2, our Level 2 Tourism and Social Action for Life students took their learning experiences out of class to explore one of New Zealand’s popular tourist destinations, Hanmer Springs. The ākonga planned this fun-filled trip as part of their assessments including some gourmet style meals prepared by the students.

We were lucky to be offered a great deal from the local tourism providers and blasted off in a jet boat through the Waiau River canyon followed by a very busy visit to the Hanmer Springs thermal pool. The hydroslides and hot pools were definitely a hit. In between, students explored some of the local tourist attractions including a surprise walk up Conical Hill (although the students thought we were going to Four Square) in the late afternoon sun.

Field Trip to Tūranga

Level 1 Social Action for Life students,

Miss Munro and our amazing learning assistants took a half a day outing at the Tūranga library to learn about the research process and to find information about

New Zealand leaders. They enjoyed ice cream and prepared lunch at New Regent Street and Margaret Mahy Playground afterwards. A fun outing for learning outside of the classroom.

On Tuesday 25 May, 18 Level 3 Tourism students travelled to Queenstown to learn about and experience tourism in the region.

Wednesday and Thursday saw two full (not to mention very cold) days of learning about Queenstown and the history of tourism in the area as well as giving students an opportunity to be tourists and have hands on experience with what the region has to offer.

After a minus 6 start to Wednesday morning, students listened to talks from Destination Queenstown on the effects of Covid-19, learnt about the history of tourism from the Lakes District Museum, and were also given a talk about the future job opportunities available if they decide to go down the tourism career path from the Queenstown Resort College. Wednesday evening students tested their limits with the Fear Factory.

Thursday saw students being given the opportunity to experience some of the sights and thrills that Queenstown has to offer. Students had a go at gold panning, a few brave souls had a go at ziplining and bungy jumping, before ending the day with a ride up the gondola and a ride on the luge.

Friday morning we departed Queenstown with many sleeping in the vans most of the way and a quick stop to play in the freshly fallen snow in Lindis Pass. It was an awesome full-on four days of fun and learning.

Business Studies

The Level 3 Business students were not so lucky as they developed their products of Gaming Gloves and Hand Made Jewellery, however lockdown stopped them from participating in the arranged Saturday markets. Nonetheless other students were still able to sell their products on site.

Level 3 History Trip to Wigram Air Force Museum

At the start of term 3, our Level 3 History class took their study on the War in the Pacific out of the classroom for an interactive learning experience at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand. A big thank you to Chris and the educational team at Wigram for giving our ākonga an opportunity to engage close up with a wide range of historical evidence and to hear the stories of the impacts of the War in the Pacific on people. The visit to the Air Force archives was an extra bonus giving students an insight into one of the possible job opportunities for historians. To make sure nobody missed out on lunch, we finished the visit with pizza in the sunshine outside the museum.
