Term 1

Volleyball is going strong at Linwood College with a successful season for all players.

The Junior Girls team had a successful season winning all but one of their games. This was a fine effort considering the team was mostly Year 9 girls who had not played school volleyball before.

The Junior Boys had a huge team of enthusiastic young men. Like the girls, most of them were newcomers to school volleyball and represented Linwood College admirably. They had a great season and plenty of fun along the way.

Junior Girls' Volleyball team: Back row: Tayzharn, Gladdys, Anahere, Shekinah, Renee, Shainny (Captain). Front row: Jorga, Leah, Donna, Masi. (Absent: Dormay)

The Senior Girls and Senior Boys both played in the premier grade, so came up against some pretty tough competition. They all performed well under the pressure and grew their skills with every game played. Both teams have a lot of promising young players who are dedicated to developing their volleyball skills.

The future of volleyball at Linwood College is looking very bright. We have had record numbers of students signing up to play this year. Students are playing regularly on the field and in the gym at Friday lunch times. Thanks to all the coaches: Paul Hoffman, Marco Guglietta. Scott Kyle and Vicki Tanner.

Surfing Lessons

Milly Mussett, Spencer Cull, Stella Derham, Setiva Hall, Hamish McNabb, Epi Nayacalevu, Fane Ngauamo, Ellie Skala, Charlotte Williams and Kadence Watson-Hall

For the last three weeks of term 1, a small group of students and Whaea Charlotte headed down to Sumner Beach for surfing lessons. The whole group now have the skills to ‘pop’ up and stand and turn in the waves.

They learned about defining the sort of waves that are seen, working out the wind direction and what that means in terms of safety and identifying rips and hazards in the water. They just had an awesome time. They all caught a ton of waves, they stood up, they fell off,

and they cheered each other on. Lots and lots of laughter, and they all slept very well on Wednesday nights.

This opportunity has been made available by Simon Thwaites of Silver Skies who has picked up the cost of boards and wetsuit hire along with the cost of the lessons. Simon is a member of The Linwood College Foundation and wants to give students from Linwood College the opportunity to share in his passion for surfing.

Champion at Junior 8 Ball Nationals

In term 1 Shayden McKenzie travelled to Invercargill to compete in the Junior 8 Ball Nationals where he took the win.

Shayden competed as part of the Clubs NZ Junior National 8 Ball competition at the Invercargill Working Men's Club on the 17th of April. This was a 3-day competition which included drawn pairs on the Saturday and singles on the Sunday and Monday. Shayden competed in the singles and won 5-3. Awesome effort Shayden!

Hamuera Tainui has been awarded the Lincoln University Outstanding Young Sportsman of the Year at the recent 2021 ORIX New Zealand Canterbury Sports Awards.

The event was held on May 10th at Hagley Oval to honour Ōtautahi's rangatahi. There were 27 nominees across Lincoln University Junior Sportsman, Sportswoman and Team of the Year - and this year they enjoyed acknowledging the success of every single nominee, with special guests from Canterbury sport and MC Jordan Oppert. Sport Canterbury’s "Balance Is Better" champion Michael Peacock addressed the guests:

"This year we are celebrating all nominees because you are all winners in your own right. Young people who have quality experiences in sport become sport lovers for life. Be brave with the conversations you have with your coaches and remember your why.”

Nicole Lopez, Upashna Karki, Tanya Raj and John Radovonivh.

Hockey is taking off at Linwood College amongst our Year 7 and 8 students with two 6-a-side teams practising every Monday after school and playing games every Tuesday at Nunweek Park. The students are coached by John Radovonich, (ex-Linwood High student and ex-NZ Men’s hockey player, and Peter Darling. Amongst the teams are two students who are getting focused training as fully kitted out goalies from specialist goalie coach, Mark Doyle, who is currently the NZ men’s volleyball coach. A multi-talented man!

We have been supplied with lots of hockey sticks, balls, mouthguards and shin guards to have our ākonga good to go. We have been also given some secondhand goals by Canterbury Hockey and a set of special tubing that we use as sidelines. Our students love hockey and are having so much fun developing their skills and scoring goals!

First XI Football

During the winter sports season, the Linwood College Football First XI took part in the senior division 2 competition against various teams from around the region.

Week on week, the boys led by Mohammed Shah (captain) continued to show signs of improvement as they crept up the leaderboard. After two heavy defeats at the start of the season, the squad bounced back with a 5-1 win against St Andrew's College and finished the season with an emphatic 7-0 win over Catholic Cathedral College, finishing 6th overall. The team learnt to understand the game, grew in self-belief and developed confidence in their peers which led to a cohesive and close-knit team with a sense of togetherness.

Coached by Mr Marco Guglietta and

Mr Garth Lewis, the team trained every week and the quality of their performances was a result of the hard work and commitment they made to the team. The departure of seniors Mohammed Shah, Roy Ah-Loe and Manaia Pita was a bittersweet end to the season. Despite this, some new faces joined the team this year and football at Linwood College shows signs of potential and desire to continue to improve.

Hockey Fitness Training

In period 5 of Friday afternoons, you will find a group of hockey players out on the courts with Mr G doing fitness training.

Mr Marco Guglietta is a minor celebrity amongst the Year 7 and 8s and he knows how to keep them running and then running more. A mixture of simple hockey skills like dribbling at speed, running with a stick, shuttles and punishments for coming last or complaining.

These sessions started out early in term 3 to help prepare the Year 7 and 8 hockey students for their tournaments later in the term - AIMS games in Tauranga and Koru Games in Selwyn.

Covid got in the way and both tournaments were cancelled. Though there are plans underway for a day of local games before the end of the year and we know our students will have the fitness to play multiple games in a day, thanks to the coaches and Mr G.

Listen closely and you may hear a chorus of: "We run and run and then run some more." "Mr G is soo tough on us, but it is actually fun." "I know I am getting fitter, even though I still want to collapse at the end."
