I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved with Kimihia this year for their enthusiasm, positivity and hard work to make this a successful year for our students.

The mothers at Kimihia have faced many challenges with housing, finance, covid disruptions, illness, tiredness and personal stress. Despite all this they can hold their heads up high and be proud of their achievements this year and move confidently onto the next phase in their journey.

Highlights from 2021

New Babies

I would like to congratulate to Zara Lockhart with her new baby boy Lorenzo, Arnika Eden with her new baby boy

Tamati and Brooke Platt with her new baby Aliryc-John. These new mothers were all very brave giving birth during our lockdown time. We would also like to wish Shavanah all the best as well with the birth of her baby in the new year.

New staff

Bethany joined us this year as our Student Liaison. Her role has been to help the girls with their housing and towards the end of the year their transition out of Kimihia into further education or employment. She has been a kind and thoughtful staff member and the staff and students have really appreciated her efforts.

School trips

We all have enjoyed many trips which have all helped our wellbeing and enjoyment of the outdoors this year. Sumner beach and South New Brighton were great places to visit as spring and summer started to warm up, and Honey our school dog certainly enjoyed it. Ferrymead 18 hole outdoor mini golf course was a real challenge for students and staff and we would certainly go there again in the future. We invited Karanga Mai to join us for a trip to the beach for paddle boarding and a picnic together. This is a chance for two groups of mothers to connect and enjoy a day to together. Aqua natal swim trips have also been enjoyed in terms one and four. Term one was at Pioneer with some visits involving the mums and babies in the pool called bubble time. Term four we went to the new Te Pou Toetoe pool in Linwood which the students really enjoyed. All students tried out the Manu pool and then relaxed in the spa after a good workout in the main pool.

Community Garden and Café

This area of the school has continued to be a very enjoyable and a tasty part of our school. James and the students have certainly made us all proud of our garden and the café has provided our extended community with a really good coffee and the best muffins in town. Healthy eating and nutrition are an important part of our school values and we pride ourselves with making Kimihia a positive place for everyone in our community.

Finally, I again congratulate James and Bianca for their continued dedication to improving the students’ lives and their qualifications. A big thanks to all our support staff, Yvonne, our Administration Manager and driver, Bethany, our Student Liaison and driver, and Irene, our dedicated van driver. A big thank you also goes out to Dick Edmundson, Principal of Linwood College, for his support, Allison, our Nurse, Esther, our Counsellor and Dan, our Careers Liaison.
