Health and Physical Education

Level 1 Health Education

The Level 1 Health Education class went on a trip to Codebreakers to demonstrate the interpersonal skills they have been learning about in class.

The class have been learning about communication, listening, assertiveness, and problem solving skills and how these improve relationships. So the challenge was to attend an escape room, work together and use these skills to escape.

This year we have been on lots of adventures. At the start of the year we spent some time on the Ōtākaro river learning how to do waka ama. We spent 6 weeks doing this and our last session was spent paddling in Te Whakaraupō (Lyttelton Harbour). Students learnt about the different positions on a waka, different paddling strokes, history of waka ama and stories of the local area in which they were paddling. From doing all this mahi the students earnt themselves 15 credits.

We then started learning about orienteering, how to read and interpret maps, compasses and navigate across land. We started doing a range of different hill tracks around Christchurch to build our fitness for our tramps we would be completing later on in the year. Our first tramp was tramping along the Gebbies Pass track to Packhorse Hut. We completed this during the day and despite many of the students having very little tramping experience they did very well.

We then started learning about the different skills needed for camping as the next part of our assessment was a 2 night overnight tramp. We completed the start of the St James trail to Cannibal Gorge hut where we camped for one night. The second day we made our way back along the same track. This track was a huge step up from the first day tramp. The track was longer and harder and students had to carry their own packs with all their camping gear. The second night we camped next to Lake Daniell. The trip was hugely challenging for many of our students. It was very far outside the comfort zone of many of them but they all succeeded in completing it and felt very proud of themselves. All of this work was worth 11 credits.

Over the course of this year we have also been involved in a tree planting project where we have a nursery on site in which we grow little seedlings until they are big enough to get planted back into the red zone - which is where the seeds have come from. We are excited to be a part of a wider regenerating Christchurch project involving many schools from around the area.

Level 3 Outdoor Education

This year many of our trips were unfortunately thwarted by Covid, however we made the best of it. The year began with some fishing trips. We went to Sumner, New Brighton, Waimakariri river mouth and Lyttleton. Unfortunately for the students much of the time was spent wishing for fish rather than catching any. However we did manage to catch a yellow eyed mallet at the Waimakariri River mouth.

Then we completed some mountain biking sessions at the Christchurch Adventure Park. This was really exciting for some of the students. We had a range of mountain biking skills and abilities in our group but we all managed to ride down some of the trails.

Our next activity was rock climbing which we used the local YMCA facility for. To pass the standard students had to climb a grade 15 climb. This was challenging for some of the students who had never rock climbed before but after lots of practice many of the students managed to get to the top of this climb.

The final part of this assessment was to complete an overnight tramp. We decided to tramp to Woolshed Creek. We tramped along the Rhyolite Trail on day 1. Many students were pushed quite far out of their comfort zone but we all managed to make it to the hut before the end of the day. The students spent the night in the hut before tramping back along the Miners Trail on day 2. Unfortunately our usual camp at Living Springs was cancelled due to Covid so we weren’t able to do our leadership camp. However we still managed to get the assessment completed at school and ran some ABL activities for a Year 10 class.

Level 3 Health Visit Reflexable

On Tuesday 18th May, the Level 3 Health class went off site to visit Shell, who has her own health and well being practice called Reflexable, on Tancred Street. This trip relates to our learning from term one around Western medicine versus complementary/alternative and traditional medicine. Shell came to our class as a guest speaker and taught us about the health philosophies of reiki, reflexology, acupuncture and massage. She also taught the class about the health benefits of natural health remedies.

The class enjoyed Shell coming to speak to us, and also our visit to her practice. We are thankful that Shell let us visit her and taught us about how she works and cares for her clients.
