Careers And Gateway

The Careers Department has been enjoying the increase in events and opportunities post-Covid restrictions, with students again able to take up opportunities around Christchurch and New Zealand to explore career options. We have moved into our bright new area in Te Whare Mātauranga, and are really enjoying the new space.

A few of the opportunities for students this year include:

  • Careers Expo - 50 senior students travelled to Addington Arena to check out what options are available right across the country.

  • Dunedin Tertiary Open Days trip - 10 students travelled to Dunedin to check out Otago University and Otago Polytech in person.

  • General presentations, scholarship workshops and course planning sessions for local universities and tertiary institutions.

  • NZIS Open Day trip - students travelled to NZIS to check out the opportunities in the sports industry.

  • Discovery Day - Year 12 students headed to University of Canterbury for a day of lectures, getting a real taste of university life.

  • First Aid training - 15 students received their workplace first aid certificate - great on the CV and useful in any workplace situation.

  • BECA Open Day - students attended a day to showcase the opportunities in Architecture, Design, Engineering and Construction.

  • InZone - we had the InZone Careers bus with us for 3 days, showcasing 26 interactive career video displays, giving our students a kickstart into thinking about subject choice.

  • Ara Barista Training - we had students participate in an intensive 6 week barista training programme at Ara, gaining 12 credits and essential skills in the hospitality industry

  • Gateway - We had a large number of students achieve their ServiceIQ Customer Service award through Gateway, a great stepping stone into any area of employment. We’ve had students in building, floor sanding, barbering, The Warehouse, Warehouse Stationery, Farmers, plumbing, construction, early childhood, supermarkets, and many more.

  • Transitions - we have had a large number of students transitioning from school into further education and employment, taking positive steps in pathways that suit them.

  • Dual Enrolment - we have had a number of students completing Dual Enrolment courses - part-time courses at Ara, the National Trade Academy, and Avon City Ford. Students are in a wide range of courses, such as Automotive, Plumbing, Barbering, Beauty Therapy, Primary Industries, Equine Skills, Construction, Carpentry and many more.
