English Language Learners

At the beginning of 2022, we had over one hundred students in our learning area, and we have gained over a dozen more throughout the year. Despite the number of lockdowns and alternating home learning days for different year levels in terms 1 and 2, our ELL students still managed to take part in many of the special events and celebrations within and outside of our kura. One such community event was the

well-attended Linwood Library at Eastgate Celebration of Music.

Performance groups have continued to meet and practise despite a dearth of opportunities to perform publicly, even welcoming our
new Head of Department with a collection of heartfelt songs and dances.

The ELL team, including Mr Serge Ruiz and Mrs Archana Martins was led by Mrs Elaine Costeira until the end of term 3 this year. Ms Emma Gillyon took over as Head of ELL at the end of October. In these last few weeks of the year, we have been introducing new mini-units of work to our ELL students to give them a taste of the new syllabus which will be implemented from 2023. Courses of study for ELL students from next year onwards will include novel and film studies, short texts, non-fiction, poetry, public speaking, and creative and formal writing. Students across all year levels will have an opportunity to build their confidence and general knowledge and accelerate their language acquisition by engaging with an array of new written and visual texts.
