Letter From The Head Teacher At Kimihia

This is our final full year at our current location as we start to prepare for our move to our new building alongside Te Aratai College in Aldwins Road. It is exciting and currently the building is well underway and hopefully, all going well, we will move in Term 2, 2023. The site we have here on Ferry Road has been a great place for many teachers and students to enjoy for nearly 17 years. Kimihia at 521 Ferry Road will be missed, however, new beginnings are ahead of us for everyone to enjoy.

As always, the mothers and their children have had a successful year in many ways. Housing has been sorted for those in need, most have gained their learners or restricted licenses, success with NCEA goals have been reached and confidence and wellbeing as proud mothers have been raised. All in all, we all made it through this tricky time despite covid and other challenges faced this year.

New Babies

We welcomed the following babies this year:

Atarangi (mum, Shikobi), Emiryah (mum, Shavanah), Wiremu (mum, Parehuia), Carson (mum, Hannah), Kaizen (mum, Mikayla), Zaydence-James (mum, Brooke).

New Staff

Christa joined us this year as our Student Liaison. Her role has been to help the girls with their housing and towards the end of the year their transition out of Kimihia into further education or employment.

School Trips

We have all enjoyed many outings this year. These include a trip to Sumner beach with Honey, our school mascot. Ten pin bowling with all students and staff showing improved skills from last year. Swimming at QEII was a great place to visit and we also employed tutors to take us for Aqua Natal and Bubble Time at Pioneer in term one and Te Pou Toetoe in term four. The Canterbury Show was able to run this year so we all enjoyed a great day and the children loved seeing the animals. Margaret Mahy playground is visited by us every year to remind the students that they are allowed to have fun.

Community Garden and Café

This area of the school has continued to be very enjoyable and tasty. James and the students have certainly made us all proud of our garden and the café has provided our extended community with a really good coffee and the best muffins in town. Healthy eating and nutrition are an important part of our school values and we pride ourselves with making Kimihia a positive place for everyone in our community.
