Health And Physical Education

It was fantastic to be able to jump into the Health, Physical and Outdoor Education Learning Area this term. This was a big change after we farewelled both Rosana Katene and Courtney Katene (nee Flay). This saw us finishing up the year with our kaiako of Jesse Harding (Assistant HoLA), Pania Watson, Michael Power, Scott Kyle, Marco Guglietta, Kaye Nordstrom, Duncan Gittins. They have all put in some amazing mahi this year.

It was a huge year for both our kaiako and our ākonga, Covid challenges aside, moving into our awesome school and our fantastic new space - Te Whare Waiora. Not to mention a name change! Our staff and students rose to the occasion and it was exciting to see our ākonga succeeding.

Physical Education

Our senior classes achieved some awesome results and some great physical battles were had in Te Kuru.

Level 1 students displayed great adaptability into their transition from junior PE to senior academic PE. I’m really proud of those students who can confidently say they gave their all in their mahi this year, some of our students saw great results which they too should take pride in. In particular, Jamie Platt-Watters, Chelden Hayward and Brandan Clarenbeek all achieved very well respectively.

Level 2 completed a hikoi up land over the Bridle Path as part of their risk management assessment. This was a great challenge that our students thrived in. Alongside this we completed our performance standard in Ki-O-Rahi. Rico Latham-Waikato and Destiny Martin were standouts in this.

Level 3 completed some awesome work in their practical assessment of Badminton. This saw some stellar performances from Felix Gurrobat and Kristeen Verde. The year rounded out working alongside some our our Year 9 students to achieve our Leadership assessment.

Level 3 Outdoor Education

This year our programme began with a range of different fishing trips. We went to Lyttleton, New Brighton and the Waimakariri River mouth. We learnt lots of different techniques and strategies needed for catching fish. However the fish were very elusive this time round.

Our next activity was mountain biking which we did at Christchurch Adventure Park. This was really exciting for some of the students. We had a large range of mountain biking skills and abilities in our group but we all managed to ride down some of the trails.

Rock climbing was our third activity and we went to the local YMCA facility to complete this. To pass the standard students had to climb a grade 15 climb. This was challenging for some of the students who had never rock climbed before but after lots of practice many of the students managed to get to the top of this climb.

The final part of this assessment was to complete an overnight tramp. We tramped to Woolshed Creek in Mount Somers. The weather was supposed to be terrible, however it managed to hold off until we were safely at the hut and then the galeforce winds came in.

We finished off the year with our Living Springs leadership camp. This is always a highlight for our Year 13’s. We participated in lots of different team building activities and learnt what ABL is, how to be a leader and how to plan a programme for junior students to participate in. This year's Year 13’s did an awesome job and ran a really successful programme for a Year 9 class.
