This year Te Reo Māori classes across all year levels have focused on learning a range of topics to enhance their knowledge and understanding in both Te Reo Māori and Te Ao Māori. Students have learnt pepeha (identity) and the importance embedded in pepeha. Marae was another focus where students learnt the different kawa (protocols) and tikanga (correct way of doing things) when attending a marae. Students have learnt to communicate in Te Reo Māori through basic to more advanced sentence structures related to the various topics covered in class.

Annually at Te Aratai College we celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) and Matariki (Māori New Year). During Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori senior students and staff provided numerous activities throughout the week where prizes were up for grabs. Kai was shared and junior students created posters which were shared around the school advertising Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. A fun week was had by all.

Matariki was celebrated in our whare where whānau came along to experience some of the amazing things that Matariki brings each year. Whānau, students and staff participated in a range of activities such as learning about Matariki, sharing their aspirations and goals for the new year ahead. And of course it wouldn’t be Matariki without whanaungatanga (coming together and sharing experiences) and manaakitanga (looking after our community) where we shared some kai. Fry bread and steamed pudding was provided and enjoyed by all our whānau, students and staff who were able to attend.
